Volunteer Opportunities

COVID-19 Update: Due to social distancing restrictions, volunteering opportunities are limited in 2020. We are not taking the P.A.W. Express out in the public out of the safety for our volunteers and the shelter animals. As soon as it is safe, we will resume our adoption events.

We are an all-volunteer group that relies on the time, dedication and efforts of our volunteers. We have no paid staff, only volunteers who work tirelessly to improve the lives of companion animals. Whether you want to volunteer several hours a week or just a few hours every month or two, positions are available in all areas and can be tailored to meet your schedule.

First Step to Becoming a Volunteer: Register Below

All first-time volunteers must register using the form below. Once you register, you will be in our system and eligible to volunteer for a variety of activities which are announced primarily on our Facebook page and listed here.

Please Note, to Volunteer with Us, You Must:

Be at least 18 years of age (unless otherwise noted). Be able to volunteer independently. Not have been convicted of animal cruelty. Not be seeking court-appointed volunteer hours.

New Volunteer Opportunites (For Registered Volunteers)

Event Leads: Looking to expand your volunteering with Prince William SPCA? Perhaps the kids are heading back to school or maybe you are an empty nester? We are in need of 2-3 volunteers to train to be event leads for our P.A.W. Express mobile adoption van events. Volunteers should be familiar with the van and have volunteered several times in the past few years. Training will be provided and you will shadow a current lead for one event before taking on the new role. Sign up here.

P.A.W. Express Van Drivers: Do you have your CDL or perhaps own an RV or large van or truck? And are you looking to use those skills to help animals? Prince William SPCA is seeking drivers with excellent driving records to drive the van to parades, community events and adoption shows. Sign up here.

Shelter Pet Photographer’s Assistant: Our longtime shelter pet photographer is in need of an assistant Mondays Thursdays or Fridays. Must be flexible with your schedule. Duties include assisting with setting up backgrounds and lights, helping with paperwork and coordinating the rotation of animals. Limited handling of animals will be required but this volunteer should not have cat or dog allergies. Sign up here.

Board Members: Looking for a way to make positive changes for companion animals in our community? We are looking to expand our board of directors. All backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome, but we are especially in need of individuals who have flexible schedules, are in the animal industry, are bilingual, have teaching experience, or have existing ties to other local community groups. Board members will be involved with shaping our organization as we celebrate our 15th year of serving the community. The board meets in Mid-County once a month except February and August when there are no meetings. Board terms may begin at any time, last one year and may be renewed annually. Orientation will be provided. Sign up here.

NEW AS OF MARCH 1, 2019: The Prince William SPCA has upgraded to a new volunteer database. We are asking all current volunteers to register in this new system to confirm their continued interest in volunteering. New volunteers register using the same form.

This new system will help us better match volunteers with available opportunities plus track volunteer hours and improve communications. We hope you like the new system!

Once you are registered in our system, you will be able to sign up for specific volunteer opportunities that open up throughout the year. Watch our Facebook page for announcements and news on how you can help.

Important note: The Prince William SPCA does not certify volunteers hours for court-related requirements.

The Prince William SPCA occasionally has opportunities for youth volunteers 15-18 years of age WITH a parent or guardian in attendance. P.A.W. Express adoption events are not included in youth activities and volunteers must be 18 years old for this opportunity. If children under 18 years old sign-up for a volunteer activity and a parent or guardian does not sign-up, unaccompanied children will not be able to participate due to liability issues.

Join the Prince William SPCA Facebook Volunteer Group to receive updates and announcements on volunteer opportunities.
