$48,000 TNR Funds at Risk! Why is the county not using the funds for the budgeted purpose?
Last year, the County Board authorized $48,000 for fiscal year 2026 for trap, neuter, and release (TNR) community cats. The county’s budget year ends June 30, 2026, and those funds are at risk of being lost. The PWC Animal Services Center was allocated these funds, but none have been used due to an issue with the HVAC system. As it stands now, the TNR money will not roll over to FY 2027, which starts July 1, 2026. Those funds will be lost if we do not act. Please tell the County Executive and the Board of County Supervisors that the community wants the already budgeted funds rolled over and used for the next coming year, preferably in July to address this crisis.
**NOTE:** Communication to the BOCS should stress that the FY2026 $48,000 funds need to be **rolled over** to the funds allocated for 2027. They should be in addition to that is budgeted for 2027, not be lost because of inactivity in 2026.
Why this is important:
- The PWC Animal Services Center has seen a 30% increase in foster needs this year, a clear sign that more spay neuter services are needed.
- Groups are seeing an influx of cats needing to be spayed and neutered. Cat Tales Prince William alone has over 50 kittens they are fostering that will each need TNR in a few weeks and has raised and spent well over $50,000 of their own money this year.
- Rescues are full and many will not take in any additional cats.
- The money was already budgeted, but will be lost if not rolled over to next year.
What needs done? Call your Supervisor and email ALL of the BOCS today asking that funding for TNR roll over to next year’s budget and used by the PWC Animal Services or another program immediately as the need is great.
