Adoption Trees

“Home for the Holidays” Adoption Tree Program

November 19, 2017 – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and we need your help to place and maintain pet adoption trees throughout the county! How can you help? First, find a local business to host a tree or wreath. Second, make ornaments for placement on the tree. Third, update ornaments weekly with adoptable animals from the local animal shelters. The adoption tree program starts this upcoming weekend after Thanksgiving and runs through the weekend after Christmas. This is a great project for scout leaders and parents looking for activities to keep the kiddos entertained through the holiday season! The best thing about the adoption trees is they spotlight homeless animals at the local shelters. The Prince William SPCA provides downloadable templates for the ornaments and pet photos, plus we have a limited quantity of trees and wreaths! If you are interested in organizing an adoption tree, contact pwspca@pwspca.org for more details!

Every November since 2004, the Prince William SPCA sponsored its “Home for the Holidays Tree and Wreath Program”. Volunteers make ornaments that hang on trees and wreaths at local businesses during the holiday season. Each ornament is adorned with a photo of an adoptable pet at the Prince William County Animal Shelter or the Manassas City Animal Adoption Center. Adoption trees and wreaths are decorated with the ornaments and are on display until New Year’s Eve. Volunteers refresh the displays weekly so the public is encouraged to take ornaments with pets they are considering adopting. More than 1,200 ornaments with photos of pets are displayed throughout the holiday season providing much needed exposure for shelter pets. Some of the businesses that have hosted a tree or wreath in the past: Manassas Mall, Tony’s New York Pizza, Southern States, VASI, Stonewall Vet, Petco in Manassas and Dale City, Woodbridge Animal Hospital, Comcast Offices, and Foster’s Grille.

Great for Kids

This is a great project for young animal lovers. We are always looking for ways to include young animal lovers in our efforts to help local shelter pets but we are limited to what projects we can offer volunteers younger than 15 years old. The ornament program is perfect because it is easy, fun, anyone can participate and it can be done all year long. Some children take the project further by adding their own creative flair with glitter and other embellishments. They are thrilled to know that the work they are doing is directly helping shelter pets find homes.

How to Participate

The program is geared toward high-traffic businesses. If you would like your business to be considered, contact us. We will select approximately 25 locations to put up trees and wreaths and refresh the pets weekly. If your location is not selected, you can still participate by offering to put up a tree and update the photos on your own.
