We are thrilled to report that 2017 was our most successful year since we started the organization in 2004. Our greatest accomplishment, by far, was our successful campaign to build a new animal shelter in Prince William County. The Prince William SPCA was the first animal welfare organization to advocate for a new animal shelter and the only one to consistently support the initiative through the approval three years later. We rallied the community and worked to educate the public and the Board of County Supervisors about the importance of a new animal shelter. The final vote took place in September 2017, and resulted in the county approving funding for a new $14 million shelter that is expected to open in 2020. This was a huge win for the animals and Prince William County!
While our primary focus this year was animal shelter advocacy, our volunteers continued to work on other programs in the community. We partnered with Prince William County Animal Shelter to microchip every adopted and redeemed animal. Our volunteers photographed more than 1,000 adoptable animals for Petfinder and social media. The P.A.W. Express mobile adoption van showcased shelter animals at 15+ community events. It was a very busy year!
In addition to our work with local shelters, the Prince William SPCA:
• donated 376 pet food bags for needy families in the ACTS Operation Turkey program;
• sponsored KIND News magazine for 13,000 students in 500 classrooms;
• sponsored rabies vaccine clinics, special events and girl/boy scout activities; and
• granted local schools $3,495 to build 20 Little Free Libraries to promote humane education.
Help us continue this important work to benefit companion animals in our county in 2018. Please consider donating to the Prince William SPCA. Our funding comes exclusively from private donations—we receive no funds from government agencies or national organizations. We are run entirely by local volunteers and our administrative overhead is less than 1%. When you donate to the Prince William SPCA, be assured that your donation benefits the companion animals in your community!
